Magnificat Concert

Experience Bach’s Magnificat live with the American Chamber Chorale and Orchestra in a free concert at Salem. This renowned setting of Mary’s joyful proclamation will be complemented by works from Albinoni and Barber, foreshadowing the crucifixion of Christ. When Mary, mother of Jesus, visited Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, the unborn child in Elizabeth’s womb leapt for joy! It was during this visit that Mary proclaimed the Magnificat or The Song of Mary, which begins with “My soul doth magnify the Lord”. Many composers have set Mary’s words to music and the ACC and Orchestra along with stellar soloists will present one of the best-known settings in this concert: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat. We juxtapose this joyous music with works by Tomaso Albinoni and Samuel Barber (among others) that foreshadow the coming crucifixion of Christ.
